SHOCKWAVE THERAPY
Targeted acoustic wave therapy to support tissue healing and pain relief
Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment option used to support tissue healing and relieve pain for selected chronic tendon, heel and lower-limb conditions where initial conservative measures have not fully resolved symptoms
ABOUT THE SERVICE
What is shockwave therapy?
Extracorporeal Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) delivers focused acoustic pressure waves through the skin to the affected musculoskeletal tissue.
The acoustic pulses stimulate blood flow, encourage metabolic activity and support the body's natural healing response in chronic, stubborn soft-tissue injuries.
It is a non-invasive, in-clinic treatment option that does not require injections or surgery. Your podiatrist will first assess your condition to determine whether shockwave therapy is an appropriate option for you.

WHEN IT MAY HELP
When might shockwave therapy be considered?
Atlantic Podiatry uses shockwave therapy to help accelerate healing and relieve pain for a variety of foot, ankle and lower-limb conditions, particularly when symptoms have persisted for several months:
- Plantar Fasciitis — heel pain relief at its source
- Achilles Tendinitis — reduces irritation and supports recovery
- Heel Spurs — helps manage pain associated with chronic heel irritation
- Shin Splints — eases discomfort and promotes tissue healing
- Morton's Neuroma — helps relieve forefoot nerve-related discomfort
- Chronic tendon and ligament issues requiring targeted healing support
You do not need to know whether shockwave therapy is right for you before booking.
Your podiatrist will assess your symptoms first and advise whether shockwave would be clinically appropriate.
YOUR APPOINTMENT
What happens when you come to see us?
We take the time to evaluate your symptoms thoroughly before recommending any advanced treatment
Clinical assessment & history
Your podiatrist will examine the affected area, review your activity history and confirm the diagnosis.
Locating the treatment area
The exact source of tenderness is identified, and a conductive gel is applied to ensure smooth acoustic wave transmission.
Applying the shockwave pulses
The handheld applicator is placed against the skin to deliver targeted pulses. Intensity is adjusted to your comfort level throughout.
Post-treatment guidance
Your podiatrist will explain what to expect over the coming days and outline activity recommendations.
Agreeing the treatment plan
A typical course may involve multiple sessions depending on your assessment. Follow-up is arranged accordingly.

WHAT TO EXPECT
What does the appointment actually involve?
You will be comfortably seated or resting on an examination couch with your foot supported. Conductive gel is applied to the treatment site and wiped clean afterwards.
During the application, you will hear a rhythmic tapping sound and feel a pulsating sensation against the skin. Some mild discomfort can occur over tender areas, but the energy level is adjusted to stay within a manageable range.
Sessions are relatively brief, typically lasting around 10 to 15 minutes of active therapy as part of your broader consultation.
There is no prolonged downtime. Most patients can walk immediately after the appointment, though high-impact activity may be temporarily restricted.
