ABOUT THE SERVICE

What is diagnostic ultrasound?

Diagnostic ultrasound is a clinical imaging tool that uses sound waves to create pictures of structures beneath the skin, such as tendons, ligaments and other soft tissues in the foot and ankle.

It is used to support — not replace — your clinical assessment. Your podiatrist may use it to gather additional information about a problem they have already examined, helping them understand what may be contributing to your symptoms.

The findings are considered alongside your history, symptoms and physical examination to help determine the most appropriate next step for your care.

WHAT TO EXPECT

What does the appointment actually involve?

You will typically remain seated or lying down while the relevant area is assessed. The gel used during ultrasound is cool to the touch and is wiped off afterwards.

The scan itself is not painful. You may feel some pressure as the clinician positions the probe over the area being examined, particularly if the area is already tender.

There is no special preparation required. You may be asked to remove footwear or roll up clothing to expose the area being examined.

Your podiatrist will discuss what they are reviewing and, where appropriate, talk you through the findings during your appointment.
