COMMON SYMPTOMS

Does any of this sound familiar?

Toe pain can present with different sensations depending on what structure is involved:

  • Sharp, throbbing, or aching pain in one or multiple toes
  • Pain after stubbing, dropping an object on, or jamming a toe
  • Burning, tingling, or electric sensations in the toes
  • Toe cramping or curling involuntarily during rest or walking
  • Discolouration (toes turning white, blue, or purple in air-conditioning)
  • Tenderness when wearing closed-toe shoes

Even small toe problems can significantly affect how you walk.

We'll pinpoint what is causing the discomfort and get you back on your feet.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

What causes toe pain?

Pain in the toes can originate from bone, joint, nerve, skin, or vascular structures:

01

Direct trauma or fracture

Stubbing a toe or dropping a heavy item can cause sprains, bone bruising, or fractures.

02

Nerve compression

Nerve irritation between the metatarsals (like a neuroma) often radiates directly into toes.

03

Joint inflammation

Capsulitis, gout, rheumatoid arthritis, or osteoarthritis affecting the toe joints.

04

Circulatory changes (Raynaud's)

Vasospasm of small blood vessels causing painful coldness and colour changes in response to AC.

WHEN TO SEEK ASSESSMENT

When should you consider getting toe pain checked?

Consider arranging an assessment if:

  • You have had a traumatic injury and need the toe assessed or strapped
  • Pain has persisted for more than two weeks without explanation
  • You experience numbness, tingling, or burning in the toes
  • Toes change colour or feel numb in cold environments
  • You have diabetes and notice any sore, cut, or pain in a toe
