EXCESSIVE SHOE WEAR
Shoes wearing down unevenly or breaking down far too quickly?
The wear patterns on the soles of your shoes provide a clear map of how your feet interact with the ground. Asymmetric or rapid heel and forefoot wear often points to biomechanical pressure issues. Our podiatrists analyse your wear patterns and restore balanced loading

COMMON SYMPTOMS
Does any of this sound familiar?
Wear patterns reveal where excessive force is being concentrated:
- Outer edge of your shoe heels wearing down down to the midsole within months
- Inner edge of the sole wearing completely flat (heavy overpronation)
- Holes wearing through the upper fabric over your big toe or little toe
- Shoes twisting or tilting outward or inward when placed on a flat table
- Callus or corns developing directly underneath the worn sole areas
- Feet aching much sooner in shoes with unevenly worn treads
Your shoe wear pattern is one of the most useful diagnostic clues we have.
Bring your most worn shoes to your assessment so we can examine the tread.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
What causes excessive shoe wear and pressure?
Uneven tread wear indicates where your foot is spending excessive time or pressure during the gait cycle:
Overpronation or oversupination
Excessive rolling inward concentrates wear along the inner edge; supination wears the outer edge.
Heavy heel strike
Aggressive heel impact or scuffing removes outsole rubber rapidly.
Forefoot pressure concentration
Dropping through the metatarsal arch causes circular bald spots under the ball of the foot.
Structural asymmetry
Limb length discrepancy or pelvic tilt leading to much faster wear on one shoe.
WHEN TO SEEK ASSESSMENT
When should you consider getting shoe wear patterns checked?
Consider arranging an assessment if:
- You are having to replace shoes frequently due to lopsided wear
- One shoe wears down significantly faster than the other
- Uneven wear is accompanied by foot, ankle, shin, or knee aching
- You develop recurring calluses or corns corresponding to the wear spots
- You want custom orthotics to rebalance how your feet load

YOUR APPOINTMENT
What happens when you come to see us?
We inspect your shoes, assess your foot structure, and map pressure distribution
We inspect your shoes
We examine the outsole wear, midsole compression, and heel counter stability of your shoes.
We assess MSK
Your podiatrist checks foot posture, ankle flexibility, and limb length symmetry.
We analyse gait
We evaluate your walking mechanics to see what movement drives the wear pattern.
We plan balance
You receive guidance on custom orthotics, durable footwear styles, and pressure offloading.
TREATMENT OPTIONS
Treatment depends on what we find
Treatment rebalances pressure across the entire foot surface:
Not every treatment is appropriate for every patient. Your podiatrist will discuss suitable options after assessment.
- Prescription custom orthotics to redistribute pressure
- Biomechanical assessment & gait analysis
- Shoe model recommendations with durable outsoles and appropriate support
- Routine callus debridement under pressure points
- Heel lifts where limb length asymmetry is identified
