CORNS & CALLUSES
Hard, painful areas of skin or a sharp pinpoint under your foot?
Corns and calluses develop when areas of skin experience repeated friction and pressure. Our podiatrists provide immediate, painless in-clinic debridement and long-term pressure offloading

COMMON SYMPTOMS
Does any of this sound familiar?
Corns and calluses typically develop over bony prominences or beneath the forefoot:
- Sharp, pinpoint pain when pressing directly down on a hard spot (corn)
- Broad patches of thickened, yellowish, or rough skin (callus)
- A feeling of walking on a small stone, pebble, or tack inside your shoe
- Discomfort on top of or between toes from shoe friction
- Throbbing sensation after long periods of standing or walking
- Skin that splits or cracks when dry and heavily callused
Corn removal by a podiatrist is typically completely painless and brings immediate relief.
We also identify the footwear or biomechanical cause so they don't keep returning.

POSSIBLE CAUSES
What causes corns and calluses?
Calluses and corns are the skin's protective response to concentrated pressure and shear forces:
Ill-fitting footwear
Tight, narrow, or shallow shoes rub against toe joints, while loose shoes create shear.
Bony prominences
Hammer toes, bunions, or prominent metatarsal heads focus pressure onto small skin areas.
Biomechanical pressure
How your foot rolls and absorbs weight during walking can concentrate force under the forefoot.
Fat pad displacement
Thinning of the natural protective fatty tissue on the sole increases pressure on skin.
WHEN TO SEEK ASSESSMENT
When should you consider getting corns or calluses checked?
Consider arranging an assessment if:
- A corn makes walking or wearing your everyday shoes painful
- You have tried medicated corn plasters that have burned surrounding skin
- You have diabetes, poor circulation, or fragile skin
- Callus is starting to crack or bleed
- The problem returns constantly despite home filing
