COMMON SYMPTOMS

Does any of this sound familiar?

Forefoot discomfort can present in several ways. Common symptoms include:

  • Sharp, aching or burning pain beneath the ball of the foot
  • A feeling like walking on a pebble or folded sock inside your shoe
  • Pain that worsens when standing barefoot on hard floors or in thin-soled shoes
  • Tenderness when pressing on individual metatarsal heads
  • Callus or hard skin buildup under the forefoot
  • Discomfort during push-off while walking or running

Ball of foot pain is very treatable once the pressure point is identified.

We assess the biomechanics driving the overload.

POSSIBLE CAUSES

What may be causing ball of foot pain?

Metatarsalgia and forefoot pain can arise from several sources:

01

Pressure distribution

High arches, bunions, or clawed toes can concentrate excessive weight onto the metatarsal heads.

02

Footwear pressure

Narrow toe boxes, high heels, or thin-soled shoes force weight onto the forefoot.

03

Fat pad thinning

Natural thinning or displacement of the protective plantar fat pad beneath the forefoot.

04

Metatarsal stress or inflammation

Capsulitis, bursitis, or stress responses affecting the metatarsophalangeal joints.

WHEN TO SEEK ASSESSMENT

When should you consider getting ball of foot pain checked?

Consider arranging an assessment if:

  • Forefoot pain makes walking in normal shoes uncomfortable
  • You notice significant callus forming beneath the ball of the foot
  • Rest and changing shoes haven't relieved the ache
  • You experience numbness or tingling into your toes
  • The pain is limiting your work or exercise
